Not sure where to go? Well, here’s some information to help you get around. The venues are open basically year-round, so come any time of year.
The 1980 Lake Placid Winter Games will forever be known for the “Miracle on Ice.” So why not start right where it all happened – the 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center. While there, make sure to check out the 1932 & 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum and see the actual goal and some equipment used during the game. Located right outside the Olympic Center is the Olympic Speed Skating Oval, the same surface where the USA’s Eric Heiden won his unprecedented five gold medals in 1980.
Next you can head out to the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex where you can check out the 90-meter and 120-meter ski jump towers that dominate the Lake Placid skyline. The Freestyle Aerial Training Center is just to the right of the looming structures and houses a 750,000-gallon pool and four kickers for training in freestyle aerials, new school skiing and snowboarding.
Just a short drive down the road from the ski jumps is the Olympic Sports Complex, home to the combined bobsled/luge/skeleton run, the 1980 bobsled track, biathlon range and cross-country trails for both skiers, snowshoers and mountain bikers.
Whiteface has the biggest vertical drop in the East, the Whiteface Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway – the only road that takes you to the top of an Adirondack High Peak – and beautiful scenery right in the heart of the Adirondack Park.
Gore Mountain is located 90 minutes south of Lake Placid in North Creek. Gore offers the most skiable acres in New York and also runs the tubing facility at the North Creek Ski Bowl.
