James Denny Wins 51st Annual New Year's Masters Ski Jump
Tommy Schwall Takes Home The Art Devlin Cup
James Denny landed twin 98.5 meter jumps for a total of 259.5 points to win the 51st Annual New Year’s Masters Ski Jump at the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex Friday night. The jumpers competed on the 90-meter hill.
“Tonight was really good,” said the 22-year-old Denny from Duluth, Minn. “Conditions were really fair, they did an excellent job working on the hill getting it ready after yesterday’s rain, it was in good shape. I just had the kind of jumps I did in training and it all worked out.”
In second place was Anders Johnson of Park City, Utah. Johnson had a first-round jump of 93.5 meters and increased that to 98.5 meters for his second jump, earning a total of 254.5 points.
Third place went to Tommy Schwall of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Schwall had the longest jump of the evening, landing a 99 meter jump in the first round. He followed that up with a 94.5 meter in the second round to finish with 250.5 points.
Schwall was also awarded the Art Devlin Cup Friday night. The Art Devlin Cup measures excellence over the July 4, Columbus Day and New Year’s ski jumps. Coming into the evening, Schwall was second in the standings behind Clint Jones. However, Jones did not compete in this event and Schwall was able to hold off Johnson, last year’s winner, to win the trophy.
Logan Gerber took home fourth place, just one point behind Schwall, with jumps of 94 meters and 96 meters for a total of 249.5 points. Rounding out the top five was Kyle Kessler, who landed jumps of 95 meters and 92.5 meters for a total of 243 points.
Winning the women’s division was Abby Hughes. Hughes landed the longest jump of the night for the women with a first round jump of 95 meters and followed that with a 92 meter jump, earning 233.5 points. Second was Lindsey Van with jumps of 87 meters and 93.5 meters for a total of 224.5 points. Third went to Brenna Ellis, who had jumps of 74 meters and 74.5 meters for 154 points.
